I have two answers for this one.

RPG-a-Day 2018

I have been surprised by D&D 5th edition and how some encounters can be destroyed by players. The example that comes first to mind is from my Out of the Abyss campaign. A party of four characters managed to annihilate Demogorgon extremely easily. I had already increased the Demon Lord’s hit points because I was expecting something like that to happen but I definitely underestimated the situation. Apparently, that’s a known issue.

The second answer is about Pathfinder 2nd edition. I’ve started reading the playtest rulebook and I’ve been surprised by a few things. Character creation seems really interesting. I don’t know if it’s going to be good in practice but on paper it looks nice.

I’m also interested in the action economy. I haven’t checked how the action economy worked in Pathfinder 1st edition yet but I know a bit about it and the 2nd edition seems to make things simpler. I like it when there’s not unnecessary complexity. I’m planning on writing about the playtest in depth when I have a better understanding of the system.

And that’s my answer for today’s question. Being surprised by a game can be interpreted in different ways. I focused on how a system works. What about you? How has a game surprised you?

Tomorrow’s question is “How has gaming changed you?”. Spoiler: it has made me a better person.

So until then, have fun!
